TROPHY OF IWPL TOURNAMENT LAUNCHED IN A GLITZY FUNCTION
It’s summer and cricket time in Dwarka once again as the sub-city gears up to host the Indian Wheelchair Premier League (IWPL). The celebrations have already begun with a series of exciting pre- tournament events organized by Dwarka City for Ek Mutthi IWPL Season 6. The countdown officially began with a vibrant and spirited poster launch held at the Sector- 17, DDA Sports Complex, Dwarka. Organized annually by the Dwarka City and Ek Mutthi Trust, IWPL has grown into one of India’s most celebrated and respected wheelchair cricket tournaments, bringing together players, supporters, youth volunteers and change makers on a single, dynamic platform.
As most residents are now aware, IWPL isn’t just a cricket league - it’s cricket for a cause. For years, the Indian Wheelchair Cricket Team remained largely unnoticed, playing in the shadows without the appreciation they rightly deserve. That narrative began to shift with the inception of IWPL in 2018 - a pioneering tournament inspired by the format and excitement of the IPL, but with a deeper purpose. Over five remarkable seasons, IWPL has gained immense traction, drawing public support and the participation of notable figures from various walks of life. This year, eight teams from across India will compete, showcasing extraordinary skill, sportsmanship, and unshakeable determination. The tournament will span eight days, with daily matches offering spectators a chance to witness inspiring performances by these exceptional athletes. Keeping with tradition, the opening match will be a friendly exhibition game between the Delhi Police team and the wheelchair cricket players, a symbol of inclusion and mutual respect. Mukesh Sinha, the driving force behind the tournament, shared, “This year’s edition will be grander and more impactful than ever before. The main tournament will run from 7th to 14th June 2025 at Bal Bhavan International School, Sector 12, Dwarka.” Sudha Sinha, President of the Ek Mutthi Trust, added, “At Ek Mutthi, we believe every individual deserves a platform to shine, regardless of physical limitations. What started as a modest effort has now evolved into a movement. We're immensely proud of the students who've been part of this journey - growing into confident, compassionate individuals. We urge school leaders and parents to encourage their children to be part of this transformative initiative.” A special function was recently held to mark another milestone - the unveiling of the coveted IWPL Season - 6 trophy. The glittering trophy was revealed in a grand ceremony attended by several distinguished guests. Among the chief guests were ACP, Kishore Kumar Rewla, Rtn. Suresh Gupta (Director, Maharaja Agrasen Hospital) and Rajendra Singh (Ex-ACP), who joined as the Special Guest. The event also welcomed K. K. Bansal, Chairman of Abhinav Global School, Md. Rashid, Secretary of DCCBI and several other prominent figures from the Dwarka community. Adding a unique touch to the tradition, a custom-designed coin was also unveiled during the function. This special coin, bearing the IWPL logo on one side and the DCCBI logo on the other, will be used for the toss before each match - symbolizing both unity and sportsmanship. The trophy, gleaming with promise and purpose, stands as a symbol of the grit, resilience and spirit of every player taking part in the IWPL. As excitement builds and preparations continue, Dwarka is all set to once again witness a festival of inclusion, passion and cricket with a cause.
Here's what the guests said at the event-
"It is not just a tournament -it’s a celebration of the human spirit. The energy, discipline and passion of these wheelchair athletes are extraordinary. As someone in public service, I believe such events play a critical role in shaping a more inclusive and empathetic society. These players remind us that with courage and commitment, no barrier is too great. I salute their determination and am proud to be associated with this remarkable initiative."
Kishore Kumar Rewala, ACP, Dwarka
"As a healthcare professional, I’ve seen countless individuals overcome physical challenges with grit and positivity - but what I saw today at the IWPL launch was truly moving. The IWPL is more than a sporting event. It is a platform that promotes physical and emotional healing and above all, social dignity. Ability lies not in the body alone, but in the mindset. We are honored to support such an inspiring and purpose-driven tournament that redefines what sportsmanship truly means."
Rtn. Suresh Gupta, Director, Maharaja Agrasen Hospital
"It was an emotional and uplifting experience to witness the unveiling of the IWPL trophy. I have witnessed all tournaments earlier and I must say that these players are national assets. Their resilience in the face of adversity is what real strength looks like - not just physical, but emotional and mental fortitude. As a former law enforcement officer, I’ve always believed in supporting initiatives that unite people. IWPL does that beautifully -by merging sports, social good, and inclusivity on one powerful platform."
Rajendra Singh, Ex-ACP (Special Guest)
"I believe education goes beyond textbooks -it’s about nurturing responsible, compassionate human beings. IWPL has been instrumental in providing such learning opportunities. When our students interact with these athletes, they see courage in action. They witness what it means to break stereotypes and push boundaries. Events like these sow the seeds of empathy and respect in young minds, and we at Abhinav Global School are proud to support this inspiring movement."
K.K. Bansal, Chairman, Abhinav Global School
Md. Rashid, Secretary, DCCBI
This is the sixth edition of IWPL, and like its predecessors, it promises to be a spectacular event. We are working hard and practicing to win the coveted trophy. I encourage everyone to attend the matches and cheer the players. I urge everyone to come and witness this inspiring tournament -you’ll walk away with a truly unique and unforgettable experience."
