FREEDOM IN THE MODERN AGE Dwarka Celebrates 79th Independence Day With Patriotic Fervour
As the tri colour flutters proudly today against the monsoon sky, Dwarka will join the rest of the nation in celebrating India’s 79th Independence Day with a blend of tradition, technology and youthful enthusiasm. Across the sub-city, schools, RWAs and community organisations are organizing events that echoed the spirit of freedom - while Gen Z gave the occasion their own unique meaning. Independence Through a Gen Z Lens- For today’s young adults, freedom extends beyond the hard-won sovereignty achieved in 1947. It means the right to dream big, the courage to speak freely and the opportunity to create a life unhindered by social prejudices. Eighteen-year-old Raghav Sharma, a first-year college student from Sector 9, reflected, “For me, independence is about having the power to choose - my career, my beliefs, my way of living. We are privileged to live in a free country, but we must also be responsible citizens to keep it that way.” For others, digital freedom and access to information are equally vital. Ananya Gupta, a tech student from Sector 12, said, “We have more tools and platforms to express ourselves than any generation before us. But freedom online also comes with the responsibility of using it wisely.”
City-Wide Celebrations in Dwarka-The heart of Dwarka will come alive from early morning. The air will resonate with patriotic songs, while streets and parks bloomed with saffron, white and green decorations. In several sectors, societies, Resident Welfare Associations have planned flag hoisting ceremonies followed by cultural performances. In Sector- 6 society, children dressed as freedom fighters will perform short skits narrating the sacrifices of Bhagat Singh, Rani Lakshmi Bai and Mahatma Gandhi. Sector-10’s apartments will host an open-air painting competition, where young artists will depict their vision of India in 2047 - the centenary of independence. The Schools celebrated Independence Day on 14th August in full spirit. Government Co-Ed Senior Secondary School in Sector- 22 presented a vibrant cultural programme featuring patriotic dances and speeches by students. Private schools introduced a “Wall of Freedom” where students posted messages about what independence means to them. Celebrations at Home and in Smaller Circles- Not all celebrations were grand. For many, the day was marked by personal reflection and simple acts of gratitude. In Sector 3, Senior citizen, Rajesh Malhotra hoisted a small flag on his balcony and distributed homemade ladoos to neighbours. “I lived through a time when resources were scarce and opportunities limited. Watching children today - educated, confident and ambitious - makes me feel that the country has truly progressed,” he said. Meanwhile, a group of young professionals in Sector -5 decided to skip the usual holiday relaxation and instead spent the day volunteering at a local NGO, distributing stationery and books to underprivileged children. “Our freedom is most meaningful when we can help others rise,” shared Priya Nair, one of the volunteers. Blending Old Traditions with New Values- From the solemnity of the national anthem to the click of smartphones capturing every moment, this year’s Independence Day in Dwarka will be a testament to how traditions adapt to the times. Gen Z brought hashtags and Instagram reels into the celebrations, yet the underlying respect for the sacrifices of the past remained unchanged. In Dwarka, the promise of independence is not just remembered but renewed, ensuring that the legacy of August 15, 1947, continues to inspire in a rapidly changing India.
Paramount International School marked the 79th Independence Day with patriotic zeal, its campus adorned with tri-coloured balloons and flags. Students of Classes VI–VIII performed a vibrant dance, followed by a stirring speech and soulful song from Classes VII–XII. Kindergarteners, dressed as freedom fighters, revived the legacy of India’s heroes. Managing Director Mrs. R. L. Saroha urged students to view Independence Day as a tribute to freedom fighters, and to uphold unity, integrity, and justice in building a stronger, united nation.

The programme included flag hoisting, the national anthem, and a disciplined March Past by NCC cadets and house teams. Class VII students showcased patriotic songs, dances, poems and a skit. A highlight was young children’s role play as freedom fighters, delivering famous dialogues with passion. Ek Mutthi Trust celebrated the 79th Independence Day with joy and compassion, addressing the ongoing challenges India faces-improving education, securing rights, and reducing disparities.
