DWARKA SET TO EMERGE AS DELHI’S NEXT ECONOMIC HUB L G CHARTS VISION FOR GROWTH

Dwarka, one of Asia's largest planned sub-cities, is poised for a major transformation after Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu directed the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) to develop the area into a clean, employment-generating and investment-friendly economic hub. Chairing a high-level meeting with senior officials and representatives from the real estate, infrastructure, hospitality, healthcare and tourism sectors, the LG outlined an ambitious roadmap to position Dwarka as one of Delhi's leading commercial destinations. The meeting focused on strengthening Dwarka's role as an engine of economic growth through improved infrastructure, policy reforms and investor-friendly governance. Officials from the DDA, Industries Department, Tourism Department and Indian Trade Promotion Organisation (ITPO) also participated in the deliberations. Addressing the gathering, Sandhu said Dwarka enjoys several strategic advantages, including its close proximity to the Indira Gandhi International Airport, excellent road and Metro connectivity and rapidly developing urban infrastructure. These factors, he noted, make the sub-city investment-ready across multiple sectors including commerce, hospitality, healthcare, education and technology.

"The future of Dwarka lies in creating a clean, sustainable and labour-centric industrial ecosystem that generates employment while protecting the environment," the Lieutenant Governor said. He stressed that industrial growth must remain non-polluting and environmentally responsible, ensuring that economic progress does not compromise the quality of life of residents. A major emphasis of the meeting was on employment generation. The LG called for promoting labour-intensive industries capable of creating large-scale job opportunities for Delhi's workforce. He said the economic rise of Dwarka should directly translate into livelihood opportunities for local residents. Urban redevelopment and infrastructure modernisation were identified as key pillars for sustaining Delhi's long-term economic growth. Sandhu observed that as Dwarka continues to mature as an urban centre, investments in civic infrastructure, transport, public facilities and commercial spaces would become increasingly important. Industry representatives welcomed the initiative and suggested several policy interventions to improve the ease of doing business in Dwarka. They recommended the creation of a robust single-window clearance mechanism to simplify approvals, reduce procedural delays and facilitate faster project implementation. Stakeholders also called for strengthening research and innovation infrastructure, reviewing planning norms and rationalising Floor Area Ratio (FAR) regulations to align with evolving urban development needs. The representatives further stressed the importance of sector-specific policies to enhance Delhi's competitiveness as an investment destination. They suggested encouraging knowledge-based industries, expanding healthcare infrastructure, promoting hospitality and tourism and creating an ecosystem conducive to innovation and entrepreneurship. Special attention was given to leveraging the economic potential of Yashobhoomi, India's International Convention and Expo Centre in Dwarka, along with Bharat Mandapam. Participants highlighted that world-class convention infrastructure should be complemented with adequate hotel accommodation, business facilities and transport connectivity to maximise tourism, international conferences and investment opportunities. Officials from the Indian Trade Promotion Organisation informed the meeting that plans are under consideration for developing five-star hotel infrastructure to strengthen Delhi's hospitality ecosystem and cater to the increasing number of domestic and international visitors expected in the coming years.

DDA Vice Chairman N. Saravana Kumar informed the LG that sufficient land has already been identified and made available for future investments. He added that the authority is working closely with various stakeholder agencies to streamline approval procedures and facilitate faster project execution. A key development discussed during the meeting was the recently approved Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) Policy. Under the policy, a dedicated committee comprising all concerned agencies has been constituted to provide seamless, single-point and time-bound approvals for eligible projects. Officials believe the policy will significantly improve the ease of doing business by reducing bureaucratic hurdles and encouraging integrated urban development around mass transit corridors.

The Lieutenant Governor underlined that clean urban development, sustainable industrialisation and efficient governance must remain central to Dwarka's growth strategy. He said the sub-city has the potential to become a model for balanced urban planning where economic expansion goes hand in hand with environmental conservation and improved quality of life. With large parcels of developable land, modern infrastructure, proximity to the airport, Metro connectivity and landmark projects such as Yashobhoomi, Dwarka is increasingly being viewed as Delhi's next major business and investment destination. The latest policy initiatives and infrastructure reforms are expected to attract significant private investment, create employment opportunities and accelerate the sub-city's emergence as a leading commercial, hospitality and technology hub in the National Capital.
