Missing Manhole Covers Endanger Residents Near Bahawalpur CGHS

Residents of Bahawalpur CGHS in Sector 4 have raised serious concerns over hazardous civic conditions after an open sewer, uncovered manholes and damaged footpaths were found posing a constant threat to pedestrians, children and senior citizens. The most alarming issue is an exposed sewer running alongside the footpath, with several manhole covers either missing or left open. Residents said the uncovered drains have become a serious accident hazard, particularly during the monsoon when rainwater can conceal the openings. They fear that an unsuspecting pedestrian or cyclist could easily slip into the open manholes. The condition of the footpath has further worsened the situation. Several paving tiles have come loose or are broken, making it difficult for residents to walk safely. Senior citizens, schoolchildren and morning walkers are especially vulnerable to falls and injuries due to the uneven surface. The exposed sewer also emits foul odour, creating an unhygienic environment and increasing the risk of mosquito breeding and water-borne diseases. Mehek Sharma, a resident remarked, "The broken tiles make the footpath almost unusable. Instead of ensuring pedestrian safety, the authorities have left us to navigate a hazardous stretch every day." Residents said the damaged civic infrastructure reflects poor maintenance and have urged the concerned agencies to take immediate corrective measures.
