Open Stormwater Drain Near Sector 23 Raises Safety, Health Concerns

An exposed stormwater drain measuring nearly five to six feet near Metro Dharamkanta in Sector- 23 has become a serious safety concern for residents and commuters. Although some barricading has been placed around the open drain, locals fear that the protection is inadequate and poses a risk, particularly during the monsoon when visibility is reduced and the area may become waterlogged. The open drain is located close to a busy movement corridor, increasing the possibility of accidents involving pedestrians, two-wheelers and other road users. Residents have expressed concern that a fall into the deep drain could result in serious injuries, especially for children and elderly people. The stagnant water and exposed portions of the stormwater drain have also raised concerns about mosquito breeding and the spread of monsoon-related diseases. With dengue, malaria and chikungunya already posing a seasonal threat, residents fear that unchecked stagnant water could provide an ideal breeding ground for mos-quitoes. Residents urge the concerned civic authorities to take immediate action and properly cover the drain rather than relying only on temporary barricading. “The drain is several feet deep and remains exposed. Barricading provides some protection, but it is not a permanent solution. During the monsoon, the danger increases significantly, and there is also a risk of mosquito breeding. The authorities should cover and secure the drain at the earliest,” said Ram Singh, a resident. The locals stressed that preventive action is necessary before any accident occurs. They have appealed to the civic authorities to inspect the site, strengthen the barricading, install warning signs and ensure that the open stormwater drain is securely covered. With the monsoon continuing, residents hope that the authorities will treat the issue as an urgent safety and public health concern and carry out the necessary repairs without delay.
